Monday 11 September 2017

It is the start of week 2!
Today I handed out the first homework assignment.  As a rule,I try to hand out the homework for the week on Monday and it is due back on Friday.   Usually there is a math review sheet which will focus on the topic we are working on in class and also some questions from previous math strands.  On the back is a Problem of the Week which we will correct in class on Friday.  I have also included a short language sheet this year.
The other homework assignment is reading.  A grade 5 student should be reading at home 15-20 min a night.  The students in Grade 5 will receive a monthly Reading Log.  I ask the students to bring back the Reading Log each Friday so I can check that they are on track.
I know that home life can be busy and some nights it is hard to get to reading and homework.  I ask that the work be done by Friday but if your child finds it easier to read 80 min on the weekend then do so.  Just write on the Reading Log when you read.  The math sheet can be done all in one night or spread out over the week.  Do what works best for you at home.
This week, we will start our first math unit.  Our focus in Mathematics for September will be Number Sense.  Grade 5 students will read, represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 100 000,and decimal numbers to hundredths.  They will also solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of decimal numbers to hundredths, using a variety of strategies.
Please remember to read over the Student Verification Form and check for any information that has changed or that is incorrect.  If there are changes please mark them on the form and sign the form and return it to the school.  If there are no changes then just sign the form and return to school.

Have a Great Weekend
Mrs T.
